It's that time of year again. Time to nominate your cattle for the Best of the Buckeye. What is the Best of the Buckeye? It is a program sponsored by the Ohio Cattlemen's Association that recognizes cattle that are born and bred in Ohio. Why is this important? Because Ohio produces some mighty fine cattle. All year long, we show with some of the best cattle in the country, but many of those cows have come from all over the country. Sometimes you have to buy from other states...we have. Sometimes you just need to vary your genetics, and what you need may be in Texas, Colorado or even Florida. The big states out west are known for their huge cattle ranches, but just because they are big, doesn't mean they are the only ones producing top of the line cows. What happens when people from Ohio buy a cow from out west? They bring it back to Ohio and breed it. Then...they have a pretty amazing calf born and bred right here in Ohio. Then...that means Ohio has some pretty darn good cattle to show and sell. That is what the Best of the Buckeye is all about. During the Ohio Beef Expo, all the cows in a class are placed. Then, just the cattle that are part of the Best of the Buckeye are placed. So, you may be showing against a high dollar cow from Oklahoma, but you can still be the best cow bred right here in Ohio. So...what is the big deal? Well...you get bragging rights...and a banner...and your name in the Ohio Cattlemen's Association magazine (can you say free advertising?)... And the top three Best of the Buckeye from each breed are awarded at least $300, $200 or $100. Why at least? Because each breed has the opportunity to add on to the minimum premiums. So, if donors from your breed add an extra $500 for first place...you could walk away with $800. But...what if I don't have a junior participating in the Ohio Beef Expo? If you bred that cow that a junior is showing...this is for you too. The Best of the Buckeye recognizes the Ohio breeder that bred that awesome cow. Then, in August there is a special reception for all the breeders, where over $10,000 worth of prizes are given away. So...if you are an exhibitor or breeder with a cow at the Ohio Beef Expo BEST show...you need to be a part of the Best of the Buckeye. To nominate a cow you show or a cow you bred for the Best of the Buckeye, you can complete the online entry form here. For more information and complete rules for Best of the Buckeye, click here.
