This weekend we took a little road trip. We have family in West Virginia that own a full-sized Hereford operation. We haven't been down to the farm in several years and happened to have a free weekend, so we decided late Thursday night to make an impromptu trip. We got up early Saturday morning and drove a few hours south. We have been to one of the farms before, but it has been several years.
In fact, Isaac has bought two of his 4-H steers from this farm.

We are a little bit old fashioned.
There are smart phones, laptops, desktops, i-pads and all sort of electronic devices...all of which have calendar apps on them. But...to keep our busy schedule straight...we would be lost without our old-fashioned wall calendar. Sure, I use the calendar on my phone for some items, especially those dates that I know I will need when I am out and about, but there is something about seeing it in black and white that makes it stick in my brain. We just got home late last night from Denver, Colorado. Yes...we actually took a mini vacation. About 2 weeks ago, Daniel came up with an idea...some cheap plane tickets...and a plan to get us all to Denver for the Miniature Hereford show at the National Western Stock Show. Our plane landed back in Columbus late last night and we are still swirling from all of the excitement. So while we are getting our land legs back underneath us...
And trying not to get caught sleeping at work... Here are some of my favorite pictures from 2016. Enjoy! On December 10th we were at the 2nd BEST show of the season. The AGR Holiday Classic is always a fun one because it is our first show at the Ohio State Fairgrounds. Being close to home means we get to sleep in our own beds...even if we do have to get up before the crack of dawn to drive the hour into town. This weekend also happened to be our first cold snap of the year and probably the coldest weekend we have had in two years. We were spoiled last year with all the warm weather, but we were snapped back into the reality of winter this weekend.
My 10 pictures this month are a day in the life of a show weekend. On October 10th, I headed outside with every intention of taking some pictures of the cows and things around the farm. When I downloaded my pictures, I quickly realized that I had captured more faces of our family than of our cows. I captured the expressions, emotions and personalities of a typical evening around the farm. More than anything...this is what I want to remember. A typical evening at 4 Wiley Farm..
How did we get to September already? The last thing I remember it was August 2nd and we were at the Ohio State Fair. Time flies when you are having fun! September 10th was an eventful day around here. Here's our day in 10 pictures. Daniel and I spent our 17th anniversary picking up a load of cows in Southern Ohio. It was an unexpected trip and purchase, so we weren't prepared to bring an additional seven cows home to our farm. Fortunately, a friend has some extra pasture space and was gracious enough to board the cows for a few weeks.
I know. The 10th was a long time ago. But...I just had so much other good stuff, I had to put this off. All of our babies have been born for the year, so you get to see a lot of baby pictures...
with a few mamma's mixed in. On the 10th day of each month, I take 10 random pictures. You get a chance to see the farm through my camera lense. Since June is Father's Day month, I decided to focus on dads..through the camera lense. It is impossible to fully capture the love of a father with a picture, but a picture can capture the moments of a father's life. “Small boys become big men through the influence of big men who care about small boys.” – Anonymous On the 10th day of each month, I take 10 random pictures. You get a chance to see what I see when I come home from work each day.
This month I was finally able to get a new computer which then enabled me to purchase a new photo editing program. I am loving Lightroom 6, but still have so much to learn. Welcome to May 10th...down on the farm. |

AuthorHello! I am Heather... the city girl turned mom to manure loving country boys. My husband and I both grew up in the city, but spent weekends visiting grandparents in the country. We are first generation farmers who learn best by almost always doing things the hard way. I hope you enjoy following along with our adventures down on the farm. Archives
