The Ohio Cattlemen's Association had developed the Best of the Buckeye program to honor and award breeders and exhibitors of the great state of Ohio.
This program, centered around the Ohio Beef Expo and the Ohio State Fair, is an opportunity to separate cattle bred here in Ohio from those bred in other parts of the country.
Cattle from all over the country are shown at the Ohio Beef Expo and the Ohio State Fair.
The Best of the Buckeye program is designed to award the top cows bred and registered by Ohio cattlemen.
The top 3 steers and heifers from each breed, nominated for the Best of the Buckeye, are awarded premiums.
Let's simplify this a little.
Let's say that you are competing in a class of 12 heifers.
You will enter the ring and compete as normal.
However, only 5 of those heifers were bred and registered in Ohio. The others were purchased from out-of-state.
Only those 5 (if they are nominated for the program) will be competing for the Best of the Buckeye.
So what is the big deal?
This is an opportunity to recognize the outstanding breeding programs in Ohio.
Not only are the exhibitors of Ohio animals recognized, but the Ohio breeder of that animal is also recognized.
What is also unique about this program, is eligible cattle can be nominated by either the exhibitor or the breeder.
If you are an Ohio breeder, but don't have any youth eligible to participate in the BEST program, you can still be recognized for your part in breeding an outstanding animal.
Nominations for the Best of the Buckeye competition at the Ohio Beef Expo are due by March 1st.
