Until we move in to the 2018 Ohio Beef Expo. I can't believe it is already here. It seems like we were just starting the B.E.S.T. season, and now we are heading to our final show. But before it ends... We have two more chances to put our cows through the ring. Thursday morning we will be taking 3 cows down to the Ohio Beef Expo. We are taking the two heifers we have been showing all season, Ribbon and Jewel. We will also be taking Apollo, our young bull. Friday morning at 8:00 a.m., we will be showing in the Miniature Hereford Breeders Association open show. This...is our favorite show of the season. Not only is it close to home, but we get to show against some amazing Ohio cattle...and some not from Ohio. This is the show where we have learned and grown the most, and where we have watched the Miniature Hereford breed grow and improve. The rows of Miniature Herefords are now a fixture at the far end of the sale barn. This is a breed that isn't going anywhere...but just taking up more and more space in the barn as the breed continues to grow. Saturday afternoon, when most of the breeders and packing up and heading home, we will be preparing for the next phase. Walker and Isaac will be competing in the showmanship classes of the B.E.S.T. junior show. Apollo will go home on Saturday night, but the girls will be staying for their final competition on Sunday. Sunday is a LONG day! Without the organization and efficiency of an amazing team of people at the Ohio Cattlemen's Association, there is no way that over 800 head of heifers and steers would make it through the show ring and still allow us to get home before midnight. This is by far the biggest show of the year, and there is an amazing group of top quality cattle. Both Ribbon and Jewel will show in the miniature heifer division. Ribbon and Jewel are then eligible to compete for one of the top 3 spots in Best of the Buckeye. We have heard that the number of entries in the open show on Friday is higher than last year. This is exciting news for the breed as it continues to grown in this part of the country. We have really enjoyed getting to know some of our competitors this year. The picture above was taken at the last show as they were waiting to go into the second ring. It just shows what friendships have been formed. Next year we will all have different cattle... We will have different winners and losers... But these relationships will only stay the same and get stronger. This is what this cattle showing is all about... Building knowledge... Building experience... Building character... And building relationships. The Miniature Hereford breed is fortunate to have a strong following and we are always excited to see the stands full at our shows. Join us on Friday morning at 8:00 a.m. to support the showmen and breeders of this great breed. Head back to the barn and spend some time with the breeders. Enjoy some time visiting and get all your questions answered...and I am sure there will be a few animals for sale. Then, spend some time in the vendor building stocking up on all your farm needs. We are almost ready for this week. Most of the food is ready to go...just have to bake some chocolate chip cookies. The teachers have been notified and the boys spent the weekend working ahead on some of their homework. The show clothes have been ironed, and we have a not-so-small pile of all the things that need to make their way to the truck and trailer. The cows have be washed, and washed, and washed some more. Apollos has been getting some lessons in show ring etiquette. Ready or not... Ohio Beef Expo...here we come! You might also like...
