Things We Love...Under Armour Base Layers

Isaac and Walker have been busy shopping for hunting clothes.  These growing boys realized that they have out grown all of their hunting gear.  Since hunting season is here, they need to be sure they have all the camo they need.

Walker is at an awkward stage where most of the youth sizes are too small for him, but they skip the adult small sizes that would normally fit him.  We have had to get a little creative to make sure he is hidden in the woods while still staying warm enough.

Walmart has been their go to store for hunting apparel.  It fits the budget, but doesn't always afford the protection from the elements that we are looking for.

Our solution...

We invest in good base layers.

We are not strangers to cold weather.  Showing in the B.E.S.T. circuit all winter means that we are out in the elements far more than we are in the warm comforts of our home.  The judge may get to wear a coat and gloves, but when Isaac and Walker are in the show ring, they can't have all their winter gear on.  They strip down to their show clothes in the barn, put their coat back on, and then throw their coat at a parent as they are walking into the show ring.

However, that show ring isn't much warmer than the outside...they are in a barn after all.

The solution...a good warm base layer under those show clothes.

The weather here in Ohio is very unpredictable, so we have learned the art of layering.   The most important layer is the base layer.  We can always strip down if we get too hot, but it is a lot harder to add the extra layers when you are already wearing the warmest coat you own.

Many times it is below freezing when we start our day, but can warm up 30 or 40 degrees by afternoon.  Again, we strip off the outer layers, but still stay warm with the base layers.

Daniel's real job is very unpredictable too.  Some days he is sitting at his desk all day, and other days he is up on a roof in 40 below wind chills.  When he gets dressed in the morning, he has no idea what calls are going to come in, so he has to be prepared each day for any conditions.
The Under Armour 2.0 Base layer are our favorites.  You can find cheaper base layers, but Under Armour has stood the test of time.  Daniel has had Under Armour base layer pants for years, but he wears them every single day in the winter, so I have a hard time keeping up with the wash.

Last year for Christmas, I was determined to buy him more Under Armour pants.  We have an Under Armour outlet not far from our house, so I decided to stop in and pick up a pair.  I was quickly overwhelmed.  They have so many different styles and options and I couldn't tell which ones were the extra warm ones and which ones would work for those days in the office.  I gave up and came home to order them on Amazon.

I opted for the Base layers, because I could tell by the ratings which weight to buy.  They go all the way up to the 4.0 layer, but I was concerned that the 4.0 would be too warm when he was driving in the truck or in the office.  I finally decided that the 2.0 layer would be a good compromise to keep him warm, but not too warm.

He loves them and has never complained about being too hot.  If he has to go up on a roof, he always has his Carhartt's in the truck that he can put on.  When he is in the office or driving around in his service truck, the 2.0 base layer keeps him warm while just wearing his normal work jeans.  They are the perfect solution for unpredictable temperature changes.

There aren't many times that I stick to a name brand, but Under Armour has convinced me that their products are worth the extra investment.  I haven't had to replace any Under Armour products because they have worn out...I just can't keep up with the demand for clean Under Armour clothes.

The boys are ready for hunting season with camo outer layers and extra warm base layers.  It may not stop Walker from wiggling, but at least he can't blame it on being cold.

Besides, we need them to stay warm for all those winter chores.
