Ross County Open

Last weekend we attended the Ross County Open Show.  It was a very nice show with Bobby May as the judge.  I cannot say enough good things about Bobby May.  If you ever have the chance to participate in a workshop or show that Bobby May is involved in, don't miss out on the opportunity.  He was so encouraging to the kids and made sure to shake the kid's hands as they were leaving the ring.  He was very specific with his comments and never compromised on structure.  He goes the extra mile and shows great kindness and respect to everyone at the show.  He even made a special point to acknowledge the parents and all that they do to make it possible for the kids to show.

We did very well at the show and were pleased to end the show season on a high note.  Walker placed 2nd in beginner showmanship and Isaac placed 3rd in junior showmanship.  I will have to say that Isaac was the only boy pulled out in the final four.  We are so proud of him and told him that it is really hard to beat a girl in showmanship (especially when she is wearing bling jeans).

The steer classes were all by weight and there were not any breed divisions.  This was the first time that Boo has had to compete against the cross breeds.  This was a smaller show than a BEST show, but there were still a lot of BEST participants present.  There was some stiff competition.  Boo placed 4th in his class.  He was right were he should have been and we were very pleased with that place.  This was a good test for what he will be up against at the Knox County Fair.

We were thankful that there were 5 Miniature Herefords at the show.  This enabled us to have a class of our own.  Rachel took 1st place in the Miniature Hereford class.  We have had some struggles with her this winter, but it was great to end the season with a win.  Each judge is looking for something different in a cow and Bobby May was quick to point out that there is no perfect cow.  Rachel is a very feminine and graceful heifer.  She may not have as much mass as some of the others, but the judge recognized her for her feminity and sound structure.

We left the show with a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place.  the boys were excited and we are all ready for a break from showing.  We are back home battling the mud and trying to get all the spring chores done.  We are anxious to get the cows off of grain and onto fresh green grass.  Time to focus on feeding out Boo and preparing for the fair.
