Wow, this weekend was hot! It was a reminder that Memorial Day is just around the corner and summer is almost here. One more week of school. One last week to push through, stay inside and study for those exams. Then...summer will finally be here! Vacations, shorts, sandals....I can't wait! I had to pull out the bug spray and the sunscreen this weekend...and the jeans were just too much. All signs of good things to come. Dinner table conversations are turning to summer time activities and all the things we need to get done in the next few weeks. It has been hard to control the men around here, because they want to jump right in...but we have to finish school first. As soon as school is out...summer cow washing begins. We leave for junior nationals in just a few weeks, so the daily cow baths are going to be twice a day cow baths...because we need to make up for lost time. But, they are o.k. with that... We have two boys on a mission! It seems like we are always thinking one step ahead. I guess that can be a good thing...but it is very easy to jump ahead and miss some of the important steps. Steps like getting the herd ready for summer pasture. That includes things like unraveling the spider web of hoses in the basement to put the tank float valves back in the troughs. We have calves coming any time. We are really hoping one comes early this week...but we shall see. It is going to be an interesting summer. We have calves coming all summer long and we have several trips spattered throughout. Our neighbors may not like us by the end of summer. Farmers were finally able to get out in the fields for about a day or two, but things are still really wet around here. I walked across the yard on Saturday and kept having to take detours because I was sinking in the swamp. We are getting longer stretches between rain storms, so hopefully we will start to dry up soon and be able to get the cows out on pasture. We missed the big 5 inch rain storm this week...thank goodness! With all the rain, and now the summer heat and humidity, the grass and hay is growing like crazy. We are definitely going to be putting the cows to work mowing around the edges of the hay field. The beloved trampoline/farm boy water park has finally bit the dust and been hauled off to the scrap yard. It was a sad day and the boys prolonged the inevitable as long as they could. They may have to come up with another way to cool off this summer...or they could just wash some cows...but don't worry too much about them. We are going on a real vacation this summer!!!! It involves lots and lots of water...and not a cow in sight. Now if we can get them to focus on school for just 4 more days... You might also like...
