Isaac's 4-H Projects

The boys are home from camp.

The stinky laundry is done.

The animals are moved in to the fair.

And we are ready for the week...

​Well, as ready as we will ever be.

Isaac and Walker have worked all summer for the next week and a half.  

This week is the Knox County Fair and next weekend we will move in to the Ohio State Fair.

This is it.

​Time is up.

We will find a little bit of time each day to get in some ring practice to fine tune the animals....

But what isn't done...probably isn't going to get done.

Isaac is showing a beef feeder this year, and he again picked a heifer instead of a steer calf.  He enjoys showing the heifer beef feeders because he has the opportunity to pick a calf based on what qualities she can bring to someone's herd as she matures.  

Hairspray is a pretty little shorthorn mix that has a very sweet temperament.  He really didn't have to break her.  It just comes natural to her.  

Yes, I know Hairspray is a weird name...

And Isaac hates it...but there is a story behind it.

In other words...my hair got sprayed with cow slobber.

Isaac will be showing Ribbon, his Miniature Hereford heifer, in the breeding classes on Wednesday.  He has been showing Ribbon all year in the B.E.S.T. program and at Junior Nationals just a few weeks ago.  

This summer has been all about maintenance for Ribbon.  She is good to go...we just have to keep her in good condition and show ready.  

The hard part of this week is ensuring that they don't get too stressed at the Knox County Fair and not be at peak performance for the Ohio State Fair next week.  Ribbon and Jewel have been on the show circuit so long that they pretty much take everything in stride.  The weather is supposed to be perfect temperatures with some rain just about every day, so hopefully we will be able to keep the stress levels to a minimum and not have to worry about the heat so much.  

Isaac is also branching out this year and showing a goat.  

I would tell you all about her...

But I know nothing about goats.

I had a hard enough time just getting the 4-H entry information filled out.

Thankfully, Isaac has some friends that are teaching him everything he needs to know about goats.  He is taking it all in stride, learning new things, and just enjoying the ride.

If you are out and about at the Knox County Fair this week, be sure to stop by the barns and say hi.  If you don't see us at the stall, just look around, we won't be far.
