We live within about 10 miles of four different school districts, but my kids don't attend any of those school districts. Several weeks ago, a parent from one of those school districts called to ask us if we would be willing to participate in a fundraiser for their music boosters. They wanted to do cow pie bingo and needed a field and a cow to use and someone had mentioned our names. Our kids may not attend this school district, but that just means we can help out all the school districts without having to worry about the school rivalries. We were more than happy to help the Centerburg Music Boosters raise some money. So what is cow pie bingo? You draw a grid in the field just like a bingo board. Each square on the grid is sold to someone. The cow is set loose and the square she poops in is the winner. Friday morning, volunteers arrived at our farm with the trusty field painter in hand. They painted a grid of 100, 10ft by 10ft squares. That sounds really big, but it isn't. We strung some portable electric fence around the perimeter so the cow would be confined to the grid area. The Centerburg kids had sold each of these 100 squares for $20.00 each. The winner would receive $1,000 and the remaining funds are supporting the Centerburg Music Boosters. Angel was the lucky cow who got to graze to her hearts content while everyone waited to watch her poop...except she pooped on her way to the pasture...eight minutes before the bingo game started. Oh well, we had plenty of chores around the farm to keep us busy while we waited. And 50 minutes later...she left a nice, juicy cow pie right next to the line. And Angel has no idea what the big deal is. The big deal is...some school kids just made a good amount of money, with just a small amount of work...and they got to learn some things about cows too. Your writing is so beautiful because you always know the right word for the right moment. I’ve studied your work a lot, and I’m trying to get better at writing myself!
