Bigger is Better

Bigger is better...right?

Well, not when it comes to cows...

After all, we do raise Miniature Herefords.

But, when it comes to equipment, bigger is better...or so they tell me..

We have two tractors.

The loader that we use for most of the grunt work, and the restored 720 that is for play, parades and the occasional work.

The John Deere 720 is Isaac's and Daniel's pride and joy.  It has been waxed far more than any of my cars ever have been.

As our needs on the farm have grown, our equipment has grown.  Two years ago we bought a round baler, and then we bought a Vermeer rake.  We love both pieces of equipment, but they are taxing the power of our existing tractors.

The 720 is a work horse, but doesn't have all the gears and hook ups that we need to run some of the equipment.

Isaac is all about new...so he has been shopping.

And this weekend we bought a new to us tractor.

Of course it is green!

Daniel and the boys headed to Kentucky two weeks ago to check it out.  They put a deposit on the tractor, but had to wait for some repairs to be made.

We got up early Saturday morning and headed to Kentucky to pick up the tractor.

They made quick work of strapping it down.

We had a lot to do when we got home...

And you know playing with the new tractor was at the top of their list.

We figured it would be a long trip home because we have a wimpy truck, but she pulled just fine and we made good time.

We were as tall as a semi.  We were a little worried about the bridge over the Ohio River, but we had plenty of clearance.

It didn't take long to unload and everyone had to get in a ride.  It is geared different than they are used to, so they all "needed lots of practice."

And she isn't clean any more.

But they sure are loving the heated cab that keeps them out of the wind...

Which is really why they needed "practice" driving the new tractor.

Isaac is trying all his convincing powers to get us to keep the 720, but it isn't going to happen.

They have a lot of memories with this tractor.  I know I am going to miss that amazing sound echoing through the field.  Our neighbor even said he is going to miss her (and he's not a John Deere guy).

Isaac is the one that convinced us to go bigger and better...

But I still think he is going to cry when she leaves.

Hello!  I am Heather... the city girl turned mom to manure loving country boys. My husband and I both grew up in the city, but spent weekends visiting grandparents in the country.  We are first generation farmers who learn best by almost always doing things the hard way.  I hope you enjoy following along with our adventures down on the farm.
